Background

Forest is nearing its product maturity phase, with its primary user base coming from China and the United States, where China accounts for the largest proportion (about 53%). The competitor "Tomato ToDo" App in China has maintained a high market share, hence Forest hopes to expand its user base beyond China. In 2019, iOS 14 officially introduced the Widget feature, one of the more significant system updates in recent years, whose core functionality can also help Forest users execute focus tasks more efficiently. The Forest team is committed to leveraging the system update's popularity to expand its user base in Europe and America and to increase marketing exposure through collaboration with Apple's official channels.

" How to use Widgets to increase the efficiency of Forest users ? "

In iOS 14, Widgets aims to enhance your product through three core aspects : providing instant information , simplifying user workflows, and considering data update mechanisms. Based on this information and understanding the constraints of engineering development, we use User Stories to explore how Widgets can meet different needs when users are utilizing the Forest.

Delivery

Through the User Stories, we have a clearer blueprint of how users utilize Widgets. We've extended the functionality of Widgets, not only to enhance the existing features of Forest but also to provide users with the motivation to focus. On the other hand, through technical discussions , trial and error with engineers, we have also transformed some Widgets into shortcuts to satisfy users' desires to start planting more quickly.
